2001 - John & Helen Page (RI) Square Dance Leaders

John and Helen began in the world of square dancing in 1963. In 1964 they became members of the Friendly Mixers Square Dance Club, Cranston, RI and have been active in the club for the past 38 years. John and Helen have angled new dancers since their graduation. In 1970 they became active in round dancing. John was President of Friendly Mixers in 1968 and 1996. Helen was President in 1987. They were elected "Mr. and Mrs. Friendly Mixer" in 1971. John was President of the RI Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs in 1974 and 1975. He has also served as Vice President of the Neighborhood Association. They have served as delegates to EDSARDA since 1972. John and Helen were the Halls Committee Chairmen for the New England Square & Round Dance Conventions in 1973-74 and again in 1985-86. In 1988 they were awarded the Yankee Clipper Award. John became Vice President of EDSARDA in 1997. They were the Chairpersons for the 1976 Bicentennial Celebration in Rhode Island and helped design the award-winning float. Helen was the Editor for the RI Square & Round Dancer Magazine for 17 years and for the Friendly Mixers Club newsletter for 12 years. Helen arranges demonstrations in schools, colleges and nursing homes. Over the years they have performed at fairs, malls and block parties--anywhere to promote the activity they love--square & round dancing. John and Helen have danced at ten National Conventions, four European countries and in Hawaii. They have been on panels representing the dancers on issues such as the A-I, A-2 and Challenge Levels (hosted by Charlie Baldwin.) Currently, John and Helen serve on the Guidelines Committee to further the New England Square & Round Dance Conventions. John and Helen's hard work and dedication to the square and round dance community for the past 38 years demonstrate their love for the activity. They are an inspiration to us all. We are proud to elect them to the Hall of Fame of the Square Dance Foundation of New England.
