Preserving the History of Square Dancing

The Library/Museum of the Square Dance Foundation of New England (SDFNE) is now closed, but the SDFNE continues its mission online by preserving and sharing the history of square dancing.

The SDFNE website contains a wealth of historical material, including:

• Bob Brundage Interviews — More than 100 interviews with leading square dance personalities from the past 60+ years.
• New England Caller / Northeast Square Dancer — Complete digitized collections of these important square dance publications.
• Caller Note Services — Complete publications from five major caller note services.
• Additional Historical Materials — Photographs, documents, recordings, publications, and many other items related to square dance history.

We encourage dancers, callers, historians, researchers, and anyone interested in the heritage of square dancing to explore these resources.

SDFNE Collection at the University of New Hampshire

A major portion of the SDFNE’s physical historical collection has been transferred to the Milne Special Collections Library at the University of New Hampshire (UNH).

The collection includes thousands of books, documents, recordings, photographs, and other materials. Combined with materials that SDFNE had transferred to UNH over the previous decade, the university now holds what is believed to be one of the largest collections of square-dance-related materials in the world.

Cataloging and organizing this extensive collection is a major undertaking that will take years to complete.

To help support this important preservation effort, the SDFNE has contributed $5,000 to the University of New Hampshire and hopes to continue supporting the university’s work in the future.

Museum of Dance

Saratoga Springs, New York

In November 2016, the SDFNE transferred much of its remaining museum documents and artifacts to the Museum of Dance in Saratoga Springs, New York.

The collection included historical documents and artifacts relating to square dancing. At the time of the transfer, the Museum of Dance was planning a future special page and display devoted to square dancing.

Current Status

As of this September 2026, we have been unable to make contact with the Museum of Dance. Based on information we have been able to obtain, the museum has reportedly been sold.

We are actively working to identify a current contact person or organization so that we can determine the status and location of the items donated by the SDFNE and ensure that these important historical materials relating to square dancing are properly accounted for.
