George started square dancing in 1986 with caller Frank Varin and the Ocean State Dancers. He met Marge in 1987, and they were married in 1992 (a Leap Year!).
Their love of square dancing has continued and has been a constant force in their married life since then.
George has played an active leadership role in local square dancing; he served as president of the R.I. Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs. When the Federation lost their meeting hall, Marge and George talked to their church and they agreed to let the Federation meet there.
He has also served as president of the Square and Round Dance Foundation of Rhode Island, Inc and now he and Marge are members of the Board. He was also president of the Swinging Squares Square Dance Club. Marge and George ran the yearly R.I. Federation “Rhody Rover” dance with callers and cuers from all over New England, and currently still help organize that event.
They are banner chairs for their club and have supported the club in every banner raid. They attend all club dances in R. I. and nearby Mass. They dance Mainstream, Plus, and AI; they love it all!
They work every Monday night with the new dancers at their club, keep the kitchen going at the workshops and at the club’s Saturday night dances, and are always the last ones to leave.
George is the Yellow Rock champion of R.I. His big smile never ends, he brightens up every dance he attends and hands out his own Yellow Rock cards wherever he goes. A great big hug is never far behind!
Any time help is needed, Marge and George are there. They are always at the nursing home demos, Boy Scout demos, schools, hospitals, fairs and the Big E in Springfield. They attended the demo at the R.I. State House in August when it was 90 degrees out, and let us use their car for Art Anthony’s equipment as we marched in the parade.
We cannot think of any other couple who have done more for promoting square dancing than Marge and George. They are long overdue for recognition of their years of dedication and work to a hobby they love so much.
