Square Dance Caller & Teacher
In our Square Dance Activity we have the opportunity to share the accomplishments of individuals. AI & Anita Monty’s dedication and commitment to the square dance movement in Vermont has been extensive.
AI, who has been calling for over fifty years, started at the young age of fourteen. Within two years he was calling Traditional (Eastern Style) Square Dancing using live music.
In 1951, AI added Western Style Square Dancing to his repertoire and founded a club in Barre, Vermont. Being a teenager himself, AI was successful in introducing young people to the activity. He began working with recreation departments in Barre and Montpelier and served as an advisor to the Vermont State Recreation Department for three decades, conducting workshops for teachers and leaders on how to Teach Square Dancing.
AI founded, called and taught for many clubs throughout Central & Northern Vermont. The North Country Swingers were formed with dancers from both sides of the US/Canadian border. This program was so successful that within a short time, with AI’s assistance and support, clubs were started in seven different towns in various sections of Vermont. While the Newport Club embraces people from two countries, the Connecticut Valley Swingers in Bradford attracts dancers from two states – New Hampshire and Vermont.
AI has called at all twenty-three of the Vermont Square & Round Dance Conventions, many New England Square & Round Dance Conventions and is a member of CALLERLAB. AI is an active member of the Green Mountain Callers Association and has served in various offices including President.
During the past fifty years AI has provided much pleasure calling exhibitions for shut-ins and at Senior Citizen Rest Homes. He has worked with the blind, mentally retarded, school teachers, recreation leaders, senior citizen groups, religious organizations and also did extensive work with the handicapped at Brandon Training School.
AI has been responsible for bringing square dancing to a vast number of people – young and old, and for developing and nurturing the Square Dance Activity in Vermont. The Cooperation Committee, acting on behalf of the dancers of New England, salutes AI & Anita Monty for their contribution to the Square Dance Community.
