2013 – Dick & Shirley White

NEW ENGLAND SQUARE & ROUND DANCE
COOPERATION COMMITTEE
YANKEE CLIPPER AWARD
CITATION

Dick and Shirley White have spread their more than thirty years of square dance involvement between New Jersey and New England. In the first decade they were active supporters of and participants in the Northern New Jersey Square Dance Association. They chaired festivals, danced in exhibitions and helped to lead educational programs. Nearly twenty years ago they moved to New England bringing with them their philosophy of active participation.

The Whites have been officers in their club, the Monadnock Squares, delegates to the Mountain Valley Dancers Association and EDSARDA and they are Life Members of the Square Dance Foundation of New England. They have also been the Chairs of committees for four New England Square and Round Dance Conventions, the 46th and 47th in Brattleboro, VT and the 50th and 51st in Sturbridge, MA.

On the National square dance scene the Whites have served three terms as the Eastern District Vice Presidents in the United Square Dancers of America. They have attended nineteen National Square Dance Conventions and they have been active participants in the campaign that has brought the National Convention to New England for 2015.

Dick White is a Korean War veteran and they have both been involved in a variety of community activities. They have worked with the Youth Fellowship and the Scouts and they have shared in outreach work of their church.

Many have seen Dick and Shirley as they have traveled to clubs and square dance events throughout New England promoting the first appearance of the National Square Dance Convention in this area. The Yankee Clipper Committee is pleased to recognize the Whites with this presentation of the 2013 Yankee Clipper Award.
