1996 – Ray & Carole Aubut (MA)

Square Dance Caller & Teacher

Ray and Carole Aubut were introduced to square dancing in 1966 by the Town Travelers, and served as Officers. Ray started calling in 1970, joined Tri state Callers, and became club caller and instructor for six New England clubs.

Ray rose through the ranks of Tri state Callers becoming their President, followed by his involvement with New England Council of Callers Association where he became Chairman, eventually Chairing the CO-OP Committee. He also served as Treasurer for the Square Dance Foundation of New England.

In 1982 The Aubut’s became Editors and Publishers of The New England Square Dance Callers Magazine. They enhanced the publication with a number of changes and Ray’s editorials became established commentaries on the signs of the times for the New England activity. Carole’s column became a popular monthly column, which continues today.

The Aubut’s are a couple who always looks out for the best interest of the activity and will turn the pages to see what can be done to make it better. A case in point is that they are founders of the 800# Learn to Dance telephone service currently operated by the Foundation. They were recipients of the Yankee Clipper Award in 1990, recognizing their significant contribution. We now honor their efforts in the promotion, preservation, and perpetuation of our square dance activity with induction into New England‘s Hall of Fame.
